Newton Abbot is ideally situated to give the dedicated or the occasional bird watcher access to the Devon coast line with its large estuaries, dunes, mudflats and wetlands it is a real paradise for bird watchers.
The Exe Estuary at Dawlish Warren has an international reputation with several environmental protections. It is qualified as an RAMSAR site and a SSSI site. It’s a great spot to see brent geese, eider, grebes, skuas and dunlin. Between September and March thousands of wading birds can be seen before they leave on their journey North.
The inlets on the estuary provide feeding grounds for the little egret and curlew. Other bird spotting sites include the reed beds at South Milton Ley, Beesands and West Charleton March.
Newton Abbot is within very easy reach of Dartmoor, which provides another great area for bird watching. Among the birds to see are wood warblers, pied flycatchers, redstarts and buzzards.
