There are some cycling lanes along the roads of Newton Abbot. The countryside around Newton Abbot offers a variety of cycle rides.
Newton Abbot Cycling Group was set up to promote cycling, provide education on cycling and provide information on future cycling routes (for more info please see listing below).
Three national cycling routes run through Devon and can be accessed from Newton Abbot. National Route 2 goes through Devon from Plymouth to Seaton. Route 3 runs through Devon connecting Lands End to Bristol. Route 27 is the Devon coast to coast route from Ilfacombe in the north to Plymouth in the south. This route runs via Okehampton and Tavistock. There are 3 traffic free section on this route, the Tarka Trial, Granite Way and Plymouth Cycle Track.
Situated approx 6 miles out of Newton Abbot off the A380 or A38 lies Haldon Forest. It is 3,500 acres of woodland which will offer a great mountain bike experience. There are 3 cycle trails, the Adventure Cycle Trail is an easy going loop trial. Then there is the Family Cycle Trail, wider and steeper than the Adventure Trial and offers superb views over the surrounding country. For the experienced cyclists there is the Freer Ride Trial, it is a very technical trail with a freeride area. This trail should only be taken by the experienced rider with the correct bike and equipment.
For those who want to hire a bike for an hour or so, Forest Cycle Hire will kit you out. Open 7days a week from 9am – 5pm most of the year. There is a great Big Bike Sale during the October half term. During November and December it is closed on Tuesdays and closed from 25th December to 10th January.
