Funding cuts put town youth centre at risk

KINGSTEIGNTON Youth Centre is under threat from countywide funding cuts.

A 12-week consultation is under way into the future of youth services in the county with a view to slashing £740,000 from the annual £3.7 million budget this year and a further £917,000 the following financial year.

Proposals include focusing on young people in need rather than the current ‘universal’ provision.

In a letter to Kingsteignton town council, Cllr Will Mumford, cabinet member for children’s services, said: ‘The targeted approach means the county council would no longer manage or run traditional centre-based activities aimed at universal support for all youngsters.’
