The secrets behind how Austins outlived House of Fraser in Newton Abbot

There has been much talk about the demise of the department store – but there’s one in Devon that is striding towards its centenary.

Family-owned Austins, which dominates Courtenay Street and Wolborough Street, started as a draper’s shop in 1924 and has seen off many big names over the years.

In fact, while House of Fraser sets about shutting 31 stores – including its flagship in Plymouth – its withdrawal from Newton Abbot 30 years ago actually did Austins a favour.
